#52: Meowth - Normal Type

[PokeDex Entry]

The Scratch Cat Pokémon

  • Ultra-sun: When visiting a junkyard, you may catch sight of it having an intense fight with Murkrow over shiny objects.

Moon: It loves shiny things. It often fights with Murkrow over prey they’re both trying to catch.

Alpha-sapphire: Meowth withdraws its sharp claws into its paws to slinkily sneak about without making any incriminating footsteps. For some reason, this Pokémon loves shiny coins that glitter with light.

Prof. Lotus' Notes: Meowth is based off a 招き猫 (Makineko) or 'beckoning cat'. They are believed to be a good luck charm. This connection is further strengthened by the 小判 (Koban) coin it has on its forhead. This Edo/Tokugawa period (1603–1868) coin is thought to bring good fortune.
Meowth and Pikachu are polar opposites, in more ways than one. Meowth's Pokedex number is 52 and Pikachu sits at 25. This Cat and Mouse relationship is strengthened by their species type, and these are too many coincidences for them not to be intentional. One final nail to this theory is how Meowth was the reflection of Pikachu in the Anime, both Pokemon not wanting to be in Pokeballs, with Meowth always trying to catch Pikachu but failing. Meowth is the Tom to Pikachu's Jerry. You heard it here first.
